gear update

OK I wanted to post a gear update but I will explain it her first. None of the things I am going to mention here are new to me but the available workflow is and I think its pretty cool.

For one thing I am pretty tired of all the tools out there being for iPads its really boring…

So what am I talking about, I’m talking about being able to process on my Nexus 9 using the Nexus Media Importer to pull RAW images from my cameras SDHC card pulling them up in Aviray or Photoshop Express processing then in JPEG format and posting them to whatever service I chose.

Nexus Media Importer displays RAW images and then allows you to save them out as JPEGs to edit in your favorite photo editor.

So my new gear is is my 2 year old Nexus 7 and the micro USB to USB cable and adapter from USB to SDHC. Its fantastic as it also works with my Nexus 5 which makes me even more mobile.

the trouble with windows movie maker

For the last couple of weeks I have been struggling with Windows Live Movie Maker 2012, not matter what I did it crashed trying to render High Def 1080P movies. The error message was always the same, “There isn’t enough memory available to save this file.” of course this isn’t at all the case. I watched the processes and memory use never did it break 6 GB of RAM there are terabytes of space left on the external USB 3.0 drive I rendered to as well. I read forum posts about video drivers and expanding the edit window so that it showed the fewest number of clips and nothing worked. In the end I decided it wouldn’t hurt to down grade to Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 and guess what… It worked, flawlessly, several times. I don’t know what is missing from the 2011 version but until Microsoft figures out what wrong with the 2012 version I will be sticking with 2011.

Magic Lantern

If you shoot with a Canon EOS DSLR then you need to have a serious look at the Magic Lantern firmware.

Magic Lantern is a free software add-on that runs from the SD/CF card and adds a host of new features to Canon EOS cameras that weren’t included from the factory by Canon. – MagicLantern.fm

It’s supported on these model cameras:

  • 5Dc
  • 5D2
  • 5D3
  • 6D
  • 7D
  • 40D
  • 50D
  • 60D
  • 500D (T1i)
  • 550D (T2i)
  • 600D (T3i)
  • 650D (T4i)
  • 700D (T5i)
  • 1100D (T3)
  • EOS M
  • 100D (SL1)

There are so many features that are opened up, my personal favorite is the setting for time lapse, there are also a lot of great features that are added if you want to use your DSLR for making video. Tonnes of support documentation and a large user group to help if you get stuck or want to know how to do something. I was afraid of it a first since it is “unsupported” and I was concerned that I might brick my camera but the more I use it the more benefits I see.

Cool Tool

If you are new to Lightroom or just can’t remember or even know all the shortcut keys here is a web app that will help you out. There are also layouts for Photoshop, Autodesk 3dsMax and Maya, as well as Blender and Sublime Text. You can even select the layout by module and OS. Example after the link.
